Can Anyone Become a Medium?

One of the questions I am often asked is: Can anyone be trained to become a medium?

My answer is yes — to a degree.

I believe that we all have some ability to connect with the spirit world, but some people are naturally far more open to it than others. Just as people have different abilities and strengths in everyday life, the same applies to mediumship.

However, there is something perhaps even more important than natural ability: having an open mind and approaching mediumship for the right reasons.

An Open Mind Is the Starting Point

There are many people who want absolutely nothing to do with mediumship. They don’t believe in life after death and believe that when we die, that is simply the end.

Their minds are completely closed to the possibility of anything beyond this physical life.

If someone is determined that the spirit world doesn’t exist and refuses even to consider another possibility, then realistically, you are not going to train that person to become a medium. There has to be some willingness to open the mind and explore what may be possible.

But I often see the complete opposite.

At the church I run, I regularly meet very nice, humble people who tell me:

“I could never be a medium.”

“I wouldn’t be able to do that.”

“I’m too old.”

Or they find any number of reasons why mediumship couldn’t possibly be for them.

Having trained and taught people for many years, there are times when I can see that somebody has the potential even though they cannot see it themselves.

Eventually, some of these people are encouraged to sit in circle.

Quite often they will say, “I’ll just come for one evening and see what it’s like.”

Sometimes, that one evening can completely change their lives.

Mediumship Is Different for Everyone

We are all slightly different, and mediumship develops differently from person to person.

Some people may discover that clairvoyance comes quite naturally to them. Through sitting in circle, learning, practising and developing their awareness, they may become very good clairvoyant mediums.

Clairvoyance can be a wonderful way of helping people.

A genuine message from someone who has passed over can bring enormous comfort to somebody who is grieving. It can reassure them that their loved one continues to exist and that the connection between them has not simply disappeared.

But I also believe mediumship can go much further than simply becoming a clairvoyant.

Sometimes people develop their clairvoyance, become comfortable with it and decide, “This is what I do.”

There is nothing wrong with that. If they are helping people and doing their work for the right reasons, that is wonderful.

But there can be much more to spiritual development.

You can continue developing. You can become more sensitive to the spirit world and, over time, learn to allow those from the other side to draw closer.

Why Humility Matters in Mediumship

Over many years, I have noticed something about some of the best mediums who have come to our church.

They are often extremely humble people.

They are not standing up in front of others because they want attention or recognition. They are there because they genuinely want to help.

For me, humility is one of the most important qualities in mediumship.

When we sit in circle and more advanced souls draw close, it does not simply happen instantly. We create the right conditions. We bring peace into the room. We quieten ourselves and allow that connection to develop.

And when truly advanced souls draw close, one of the qualities I continually recognise is humility.

There is no ego.

There is simply love, peace and a desire to help.

That is why I believe anyone developing mediumship should remember that the purpose isn’t to prove how gifted you are. It isn’t about becoming important.

It is about what you can do to help others.

A Healer Is Also a Medium

Not everybody who develops spiritually will become a clairvoyant medium.

Some people may find that their path is healing.

From my point of view, a spiritual healer is also a medium.

When you are giving healing, you are opening yourself to allow those in the spirit world to draw close and work through you.

I believe that all true spiritual healing ultimately comes from the other side. There are many healers in the spirit world who can draw close and help.

Depending on your beliefs or religion, you may understand the source of that healing differently. From my own Christian perspective, I believe the source of all healing is Jesus Christ.

The healer here on Earth is not creating that healing themselves. They are providing the connection — opening the door so that help can come through.

Again, I have found that some of the best healers are incredibly humble people.

They may not believe they have any particular ability at all.

I’ve met people and thought, “You could become a very good healer,” only for them to tell me that they couldn’t possibly do it.

Then they try.

And sometimes it changes their lives.

You Don’t Have to Believe You Are Gifted

One of the biggest misconceptions about mediumship is that you must somehow know from the beginning that you are a medium.

That simply isn’t always the case.

Some people are naturally aware of spirit from a young age. Others may go through much of their lives without recognising any spiritual ability at all.

It can be sitting in circle, experiencing healing or simply allowing themselves to become more open that begins to reveal something they didn’t realise was there.

You don’t necessarily need to believe that you have a special gift.

What matters far more is your attitude towards it.

So, Can Everybody Become a Medium?

To some degree, I believe we all have the potential to develop spiritually.

But that doesn’t mean everybody will become a clairvoyant medium, nor does it mean everybody should.

Some people will naturally develop more strongly than others. Some may become clairvoyants. Some may discover an ability for healing. Others may simply become more spiritually aware.

The important thing is not to force it or approach it with ego.

Keep your mind open.

Accept that there are things about life, death and the spirit world that we still don’t fully understand.

Be willing to learn.

Be humble.

And above everything else, remember that love is the key to everything.

That, for me, is where true spiritual development begins.
