Why We Don’t Sense Everything in the Spirit World Around Us

One of the things people often struggle to understand about the spirit world is just how much may be going on around us at any one time.

If the spirit world exists around us, why can’t we see it all? Why can’t we sense every loved one, every spirit or everything else that may be close?

From my experience as a medium, I believe the answer is actually quite simple:

It would be far too much for us to cope with.

We are not meant to sense everything around us all of the time.

There Is More Around Us Than We Realise

I base much of this on what I have experienced through mediumship and through teaching others over many years.

Recently, I was teaching in a circle situation. As people sat together developing their mediumship, there were so many loved ones drawing close to each person.

I am talking about perhaps 30 or 40 people around an individual, along with many others helping with what was taking place.

When people are learning and developing spiritually, those on the other side know what is happening. Loved ones can draw close, but so can those who are there to help with the development.

From a spiritual point of view, the walls of the room or the house become irrelevant.

There can be an enormous amount taking place around us that we simply cannot see.

Imagine Being Able to See Everything

Think about what it would actually be like if you could suddenly see and sense all of it.

You might become aware of dozens of people in spirit around you. You might sense loved ones, people helping them and more advanced souls who have themselves moved further on.

Then there are animals and other creatures in the spirit world.

From my own experiences and beliefs, there are also nature spirits, angels and many other forms of life and existence that we do not fully understand.

There is so much beyond our normal physical awareness.

If all of that suddenly became visible to you at once, how would you possibly continue with your normal life?

It would be overwhelming.

Your Loved Ones Can Be Closer Than You Think

One of the things I believe very strongly is that you only have to think about your loved ones who have passed over and they can draw close.

For them, movement is not the same as it is for us.

We think in terms of physical distance. Someone is in another town, another country or on the other side of the world.

Those in spirit do not exist within those same physical limitations.

You can be sitting quietly at home, think about someone you loved who has passed over, and they can be there.

That is their world.

What Is Spiritual Sight?

Those who have moved on also develop what I describe as spiritual sight.

They can understand far more about us than we might realise. They can look at our lives and understand who we are in a way that is very different from how we see one another here.

But we don’t have that same spiritual sight while living our everyday physical lives.

If we did, we would become aware of an extraordinary amount.

Those who have communicated from the other side have told us time and time again about the learning and development that takes place after passing over.

Just as we have things to learn here, there is still learning on the other side.

What Happens When You Train as a Medium?

When you begin training as a medium, you are not suddenly opening yourself up to absolutely everything around you.

You are gradually opening your mind.

You begin accepting the possibility that there is more happening around you than you can physically see. As your mind becomes more open, you may gradually become more sensitive to the spirit world.

But everybody is different.

Some people naturally sense a great deal.

In fact, I have met people who don’t particularly want to become mediums because they already feel that they sense too much. For them, becoming more aware can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Then you have the opposite.

There are people who begin training convinced that they will never be particularly good mediums.

They sit in circle, begin their development and discover that they can actually sense an enormous amount.

That is why good training is not simply about trying to make somebody experience as much as possible.

It is about helping them develop their awareness in a way they can understand and cope with.

You Don’t Need to Sense Everything

This is something I think is particularly important for people beginning their spiritual development.

You do not need to sense everything around you.

Becoming more spiritually aware doesn’t mean walking around every day seeing spirits everywhere or constantly hearing, feeling or sensing things.

That wouldn’t necessarily be helpful.

The more we accept that there may be things happening beyond our normal awareness, the more we may begin to sense. But ideally, that sensitivity develops in a way we can cope with.

There needs to be balance.

You still have a life to live here.

Even Experienced Mediums Need to Close the Door

I have been a medium for many years, but that doesn’t mean I want my mind completely open to the spirit world every moment of every day.

Through my work, I regularly deal with people who believe they have unwanted spirits or attachments around them. People contact me from different parts of the world asking for help.

When I am doing that work, I deliberately open the door.

I become receptive to what is happening and, from my perspective, those on the other side draw close to help. I have always said that they are really doing the work — not me.

But there is a time for doing that work.

I couldn’t remain completely open to those things constantly.

It would simply be too much.

When I need to sense something, and when the timing is right, I can open myself to it. When that work is finished, I can return to my everyday life.

That distinction is extremely important.

We Are Not Supposed to See It All

People sometimes think that becoming spiritually developed should eventually mean being able to see and understand everything.

I don’t believe that is the purpose at all.

There is far more happening around us than we could possibly comprehend during our physical lives.

We can become more aware. We can develop our mediumship. We can learn to sense those in spirit and perhaps understand a little more about the world beyond this one.

But we don’t need access to everything.

Perhaps part of our development is learning when to open the door — and when to keep it closed.

After all my years as a medium, I personally have no doubt that there is far more around us than we normally realise.

But I am also very grateful that I don’t have to sense all of it, all of the time.

Sometimes, not seeing everything is exactly what allows us to live the life we are here to live.
