One of the questions I am asked all the time is:
“How do I protect myself from evil spirits?”
The advice I am going to share is the same advice I give to people who come to me believing they have had a negative spirit or attachment with them — sometimes for many years.
From my experience as a medium, spiritual protection really comes down to two important things.
Firstly, don’t deliberately put yourself in situations where you are opening yourself to something you don’t understand.
And secondly:
Ask your loved ones on the other side to draw close and protect you.
Let me explain what I mean.
1. Be Careful What You Open Yourself Up To
The first part of spiritual protection is prevention.
I believe there are many wandering spirits around the Earth plane. Most people will go through their everyday lives without experiencing any problems whatsoever.
But deliberately trying to open yourself to the spirit world without understanding what you are doing is different.
For example, if you sit in a spiritual circle where there is no proper training or protection and simply try to open yourself completely, how do you know what you are opening yourself to?
You don’t.
I have encountered people who believe their problems began in exactly this sort of situation.
That is why I have always believed that mediumship needs to be developed responsibly.
Be Careful With Haunted Places
Another example is deliberately visiting somewhere believed to be haunted because you want to experience something frightening.
People might think:
“Let’s see if we can find the ghost.”
“Let’s see if we can make something happen.”
But think about what you are actually doing.
If there genuinely is somebody in spirit there, I believe there are different possibilities.
Perhaps it is somebody who has died and is completely confused about what has happened to them. In that case, groups of people arriving and deliberately trying to provoke a reaction may simply create more confusion.
Or perhaps there is something genuinely negative there.
If so, deliberately opening your mind and trying to sense it is exactly what I would advise against.
You are focusing your attention on it and inviting some form of interaction.
Why take that risk simply for excitement?
Don’t Experiment Without Understanding What You’re Doing
The same principle applies to any spiritual practice where you deliberately put yourself into an extremely receptive state.
My concern isn’t necessarily the particular practice or what somebody chooses to call it.
It is the act of opening yourself without understanding how to control that sensitivity.
You might sense something pleasant.
You might sense nothing at all.
But from my perspective, you could also become aware of something mischievous or negative.
That is why curiosity alone isn’t a good enough reason to start experimenting with the spirit world.
Being Naturally Sensitive Doesn’t Mean You Are Protected
I have also met people who have had no mediumship training whatsoever but believe they are naturally gifted.
They may sense something and think:
“I’m obviously a natural medium.”
They then concentrate harder.
They try to make whatever they are sensing come closer.
This is where I believe people need to be particularly careful.
Something feeling friendly does not automatically mean that it is.
In my experience, negative spirits can be deceptive. If somebody is determined to communicate with whatever they sense, they may ignore their own instincts because they are excited by what appears to be happening.
Being spiritually sensitive and understanding spiritual development are not necessarily the same thing.
That is one reason proper training matters.
Listen When Something Doesn’t Feel Right
Your own instincts matter as well.
I have known people giving spiritual readings who have had a strong feeling that they shouldn’t continue.
If something feels wrong, don’t ignore that feeling because you think you have to prove yourself as a medium.
Stop.
You do not have to communicate with everything you sense.
You do not have to investigate every strange feeling.
And you certainly don’t need to demonstrate how brave or spiritually gifted you are.
Sometimes the sensible response is simply to walk away.
2. Ask Your Loved Ones to Draw Close
The second part of spiritual protection is something I regularly tell people who come to me for help.
Ask your loved ones in spirit to draw close to you.
From my experience, when I believe I have removed something negative from somebody, one of the first things I often sense is their loved ones coming extremely close.
To me, it feels as though they have been waiting to help.
I believe our loved ones on the other side want to support us, but free will is extremely important in the spirit world.
That is why I encourage people to ask.
You don’t need a complicated ritual.
You don’t need special objects.
Simply ask the people you loved, who have passed over, to come close and help protect you.
Spiritual Protection Can Be Simple
Perhaps you walk into a house and something doesn’t feel right.
Perhaps you are around somebody and suddenly feel uncomfortable.
Or perhaps you simply have one of those moments where your instincts are telling you that something isn’t quite right.
From my perspective, you can quietly ask:
“Please draw close to me and protect me.”
That’s enough.
I believe those in spirit can respond instantaneously because they are not restricted by physical distance in the way we are.
You are also using your free will to invite the people who love you to come closer.
Don’t Live Your Life Frightened
This is perhaps the most important point I want people to understand.
Evil spirits aren’t simply waiting around every corner to attack you.
You don’t normally walk down the road one day and suddenly find yourself overtaken by something evil for absolutely no reason.
In the cases I have encountered, there has usually been something that appears to have created the connection.
That is why I don’t want people reading about spiritual protection and suddenly becoming frightened of everything around them.
Quite the opposite.
Live your life.
Go to work. See your friends. Enjoy your family. Go on holiday. Walk through the countryside. Do all the normal things you enjoy doing.
You don’t need to spend your life constantly worrying about what may or may not be around you.
Don’t Let Fear Become the Problem
There is another danger when talking about evil spirits: people can begin interpreting every difficult experience as something spiritual.
A bad dream doesn’t automatically mean you have an attachment.
Feeling anxious in a particular place doesn’t prove there is an evil spirit there.
Intrusive thoughts, changes in mood or feeling unlike yourself can have many ordinary explanations and shouldn’t automatically be attributed to the spirit world.
If something is affecting your mental or physical health, it is important to seek appropriate professional help rather than assuming the cause must be spiritual.
Spiritual beliefs should never prevent somebody from getting the practical help they need.
My Two Rules for Spiritual Protection
After many years of mediumship and helping people who believe they have experienced negative spirits, my advice remains remarkably simple:
Don’t deliberately open yourself to things you don’t understand.
And:
If you feel uncomfortable, ask your loved ones on the other side to draw close.
You don’t need to spend your life frightened.
You don’t need complicated rituals.
And you certainly don’t need to become obsessed with protecting yourself from evil.
Be sensible about spiritual development, listen to your instincts and don’t deliberately seek out negative experiences simply to see what happens.
And remember your loved ones.
From my experience, nothing makes them happier than being asked to draw close, because ultimately, all they want to do is help you.
