I am regularly contacted by parents who are concerned because their child is sensing, seeing or even speaking to someone they cannot see themselves.
Naturally, one of the first worries is often: Is there something nasty around my child? Is there a spirit attached to them? Is something wrong?
In the vast majority of cases, there is absolutely nothing to worry about.
Children Are Naturally Very Sensitive
Children, including teenagers, can be incredibly sensitive to the spirit world. They may sense far more going on around them than adults realise.
A young child might talk about seeing somebody in the house. They may describe a person they believe is standing nearby or even have conversations with somebody their parents cannot see.
For a parent who has never experienced anything like this themselves, it can understandably be frightening.
The natural reaction is often to say:
“There’s nobody there. You’re imagining it. Don’t worry about it.”
But from my experience as a medium, children can genuinely be sensing something.
That doesn’t mean there is anything bad happening.
It May Simply Be a Loved One in Spirit
In many of the cases I come across, the person the child is sensing is actually a grandparent, relative or another loved one who has passed over.
Sometimes the relative in spirit may not even realise just how clearly the child is able to sense them.
I’ve come across situations where children appear to be having conversations with somebody in spirit. To someone watching from the outside, that can seem very strange and understandably cause concern.
But there doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem.
The relative may simply be close to the child, perhaps watching over them or helping them as they grow.
Why Does It Often Stop as Children Get Older?
As children grow up, they often become less sensitive to these experiences.
Life becomes busier. There is school, friendships, relationships, work and all the everyday pressures that come with growing up.
They may also repeatedly be told that what they are sensing isn’t real.
Gradually, many people seem to desensitise themselves and stop noticing the things they once did so naturally.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the sensitivity has disappeared completely.
Sensitivity Can Return Later in Life
Something else I regularly see is people beginning to sense things again later in life.
Someone may have had experiences as a child, forgotten about them for many years, and then suddenly begin sensing things again in their 30s, 40s or beyond.
They might think:
“I used to experience this when I was young. Why is it happening again? Am I losing the plot?”
No, you’re not.
As we get older, we have been through more experiences. We change, develop and sometimes become more open again to things we may have shut ourselves away from when we were younger.
That sensitivity can begin to return.
Should You Be Worried If Your Child Is Sensing Spirits?
Most of the time, no.
A child sensing somebody in spirit does not automatically mean they have a nasty spirit with them, that they have an attachment or that something bad is happening.
It may simply be part of their natural sensitivity.
Of course, if your child is frightened or their experiences are causing them distress, you should always listen to them and take their feelings seriously. There can also be ordinary explanations for unusual experiences, so it is important not to immediately assume that everything is spiritual.
But equally, I don’t believe children should automatically be told that what they are experiencing is rubbish or that they are imagining everything.
Listen to them. Reassure them. Don’t make them frightened of what they are sensing.
In many cases, there is nothing sinister happening at all.
Sensitivity Doesn’t Have to Be Something to Fear
Whether it happens during childhood or returns later in life, sensing the spirit world can initially feel confusing or even frightening.
But sensitivity itself isn’t something that needs to be feared.
If you experienced things when you were young and are beginning to sense them again later in life, it doesn’t mean you’re losing your mind. And if your child tells you they are sensing or seeing somebody you cannot, it doesn’t automatically mean there is something wrong with them.
Most of these situations are completely normal from a spiritual point of view.
And if you are genuinely concerned about what you or your child is experiencing, you are always welcome to contact me.
