One of the most common misconceptions about ghosts is that they stay behind because they want to frighten people or because something sinister is happening.
In my experience as a medium, that is very rarely the case.
Recently, I helped someone who contacted me after becoming convinced there was a spirit in their home. After watching some of my videos, they reached out for help, and what I found was something I’ve seen many times before.
The spirit wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t evil.
He simply didn’t want to move on.
A Spirit Who Was Afraid of the Next World
The gentleman who remained in the house had lived there for many years. He had built parts of the property himself and had invested so much of his life into it.
Naturally, he felt attached to it.
But that wasn’t the real reason he stayed.
The deeper reason was fear.
During his lifetime, there had been several people he had fallen out with. Those people had already passed into the spirit world, and he believed that if he moved on, he would have to face them again.
He simply wasn’t ready.
To many people, that might sound surprisingly ordinary.
But that’s exactly the point.
Sometimes the reasons spirits remain close to Earth are incredibly human.
Free Will Continues After Death
One of the most important principles I have learned through mediumship is that free will doesn’t disappear when we die.
Just as we make choices during our lives, we continue to make choices after leaving the physical body.
No one is forced to move into the next world.
If someone is confused, frightened or uncertain, they may choose to remain where they feel safe until they are ready.
That is why some wandering spirits need help.
People Change in the Spirit World
I explained something important to this gentleman.
The people he was afraid of meeting would not be the same people they had been during their earthly lives.
When we pass into the spirit world, we begin to see our lives much more clearly.
Eventually, every person reflects on how they lived.
They recognise where they were kind.
They recognise where they caused pain.
They understand the consequences of their actions.
Time and time again, during clairvoyance, I hear people in spirit apologise.
Sometimes they apologise for major mistakes.
Sometimes they simply say:
“I wish I’d told you I loved you more often.”
Growth doesn’t stop after death.
In many ways, it truly begins.
A Beautiful Reunion
As I worked with this gentleman, I opened the connection between this world and the next, as I do in these situations.
His mother came forward.
She gently reassured him.
She explained that everything he had enjoyed doing on Earth—building, creating and being productive—could continue in the spirit world.
He wasn’t leaving everything behind.
He was moving somewhere even more beautiful.
Then something else happened.
Some of the very people he had been afraid of meeting came forward.
Instead of anger, they simply said:
“We’re sorry.”
In that moment, everything changed.
The fear disappeared.
He realised there was nothing waiting for him except understanding, forgiveness and love.
Choosing to Move On
Once he understood there was nothing to fear, the decision became his.
No one forced him.
No one pushed him.
He simply chose.
I watched him leave and move peacefully into the next world.
Since then, there has been no further activity in that house.
The spirit had moved on.
Even Difficult Souls Can Hesitate
People often assume that only kind, gentle spirits hesitate to move on.
That isn’t always true.
Sometimes I encounter spirits who behaved very badly during their earthly lives.
They are often frightened too.
Not because someone is waiting to punish them, but because they know they have made serious mistakes.
Many fear judgement.
Yet my experience has shown that the spirit world is not about revenge.
It is about learning.
Those who have caused harm eventually come to understand the effects of their actions and begin the long process of making things right through love, growth and helping others.
Once They Move On, They Don’t Return
One question I am often asked is whether someone who has moved into the spirit world can become trapped again or return to haunt a house.
In all my decades of working as a medium, I have never experienced that happening.
Once someone truly moves on…
Once they see the beauty of the next world…
Once they are reunited with their loved ones…
They do not want to come back.
Final Thoughts
Every spirit has their own story.
Some remain because they are attached to a home.
Some because they worry about loved ones.
Some because they are frightened of what comes next.
And some, like the gentleman I recently helped, simply need reassurance that forgiveness, love and peace await them.
The wonderful thing is that once they understand, the choice is theirs.
When they are ready, they move on.
And in all my years of doing this work, I have never known anyone regret that decision.
