There is one aspect of my work that worries me more than almost anything else.
Over many years as a medium, I have met people who have had a spirit attached to them. In some cases, that attachment has had a profound effect on their lives. They have struggled emotionally, mentally and spiritually, sometimes feeling as though they are no longer completely themselves.
People often use the word “possessed” to describe these situations.
While I believe genuine spirit attachment can happen, my experience is that these cases are far rarer than films and television would have us believe. However, when they do occur, they can be incredibly serious.
When Spiritual Experiences Are Misunderstood
One experience has stayed with me for many years.
A lady came to see me after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. She had been told she had multiple personalities, and as she explained what she was experiencing, something immediately stood out to me.
She wasn’t describing what I understood to be multiple personalities.
She was describing something that closely resembled trance mediumship.
I have taught trance mediumship for many years. In a genuine trance, a trained medium allows communication from the spirit world in a safe, controlled and protected environment.
The difference was that this lady had absolutely no knowledge of mediumship.
She didn’t understand what was happening to her.
She had simply assumed that whatever she was sensing must be friendly.
In my experience, that isn’t always the case.
Our loved ones would never force themselves upon us or take control in that way.
I also became aware of her grandfather standing beside her in spirit. He was deeply distressed and simply wanted someone to understand what she was going through.
A Question That Has Always Stayed With Me
Experiences like this have left me with one question that I still cannot ignore.
How many people may be living with what they believe to be a purely medical condition when, in some cases, there could also be a genuine spiritual element?
I want to be clear that I am not saying this applies to everyone with a mental health diagnosis. Far from it.
Mental illness is real, and anyone experiencing symptoms should seek appropriate medical advice and treatment.
However, throughout my years of working as a medium, I have personally encountered individuals who, after spiritual help and the removal of what I believed to be a spirit attachment, were able to return to living normal lives.
Those experiences have made me wonder whether, in some rare cases, spiritual factors may be overlooked.
The Most Difficult Work I Do
Removing a spirit attachment is not something I take lightly.
It is certainly not something that anyone should attempt without many years of experience, guidance and spiritual protection.
Some of the darkest things I have ever encountered have not been human spirits at all, but what I can only describe as negative entities.
This work requires complete confidence and absolute trust in those working alongside me from the spirit world.
I Never Work Alone
People sometimes assume that I remove spirits through my own abilities.
That isn’t how I see it.
I believe I am incredibly fortunate to have guides, helpers and spiritual teachers working with me constantly.
Those who attend my development circles will often tell you they can sense those spiritual helpers standing behind me.
They are the ones who protect me.
They are the ones who carry out the work.
My role is simply to begin the process and work alongside them.
I have spent more than 50 years developing as a medium, and I still feel I am learning every day.
Fear Is Never the Answer
One of the most important lessons I have learned is this:
Fear gives negativity strength.
If I approached this work frightened, I would not be able to do it.
The reason I am not afraid is because I know I am never facing these situations alone.
I have complete faith in those who work with me from the spirit world.
That confidence allows the work to take place safely.
My Greatest Concern
When I look back over the many people I have been privileged to help, one thought always stays with me.
How many others are still suffering?
How many people are struggling with something that could, in at least some rare cases, have a spiritual cause alongside everything else?
I don’t claim to have all the answers.
There is still so much we don’t understand about either the spirit world or the human mind.
But after decades of working in this field, I cannot ignore what I have personally witnessed time and time again.
For me, that remains one of the biggest motivations to continue this work.
Because if even one person can be helped to find peace again, then it is work worth doing.
