People often ask me about trance mediumship — how it works, whether it is real, and perhaps most importantly, whether it can be dangerous or evil.
Trance mediumship is something that has been part of my life for almost five decades now. I grew up around it. My aunts, uncles, and grandparents were all trance mediums, so from a very young age it was something that felt completely natural to me.
Today, I still teach trance mediumship within my circle, and several people I work with are able to do it successfully and safely.
But there are also many misunderstandings surrounding it.
What Is Trance Mediumship?
A trance medium is someone who allows spirit to communicate through them.
In simple terms, when trance takes place, the spirit communicator uses the medium’s body and voice in order to speak. They are using the medium’s lungs, speech, and energy to get their message across.
To many people, this sounds strange or even frightening, but historically trance mediumship was actually a very common form of spiritual communication.
The important thing to understand is that trance itself is not evil.
However, just because something is spiritual does not automatically mean it is good.
Not Every Spirit Is Wise or Loving
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that because a spirit is communicating from the next world, everything it says must automatically be true, wise, or helpful.
That simply is not the case.
Just as there are kind, loving, and good people on the earth plane, there are also confused, unpleasant, and sometimes deeply negative people here as well. And when people pass into the next world, they do not suddenly become perfect overnight.
How someone lives their life shapes the spiritual condition they carry with them.
If someone is loving and kind, they naturally move towards love and light. If someone is cruel, selfish, or hateful, they are drawn towards darker conditions that reflect the way they have lived.
Eventually, every soul learns and grows. But that does not mean negative spirits do not exist.
This is why discernment is so important within spiritual work.
The Importance of a Protected Circle
When trance mediumship is practised correctly, it should always take place within a protected circle.
Before sitting in circle, prayers should be said. Protection should be asked for. Loved ones, guides, and helpers from the spirit world should be invited to draw close.
Within my own circle, I have never experienced problems because everything is approached carefully, respectfully, and with protection.
But even within a protected environment, you must still use your judgement.
You judge the communication by the words being spoken.
Are the words loving?
Are they kind?
Do they bring comfort, wisdom, and understanding?
Do they make sense?
And equally importantly — how do they make you feel?
True spiritual communication should uplift, help, and encourage people. It should never leave someone feeling fearful, manipulated, or emotionally disturbed.
The Danger of Treating It Like a Game
Problems often arise when people treat spiritual practices lightly.
Some people approach trance, Ouija boards, or circles as entertainment. They think it will be funny or exciting to “see what happens” if they try to attract spirit.
But if you open yourself up without protection or understanding, you have no control over what may draw close.
This is where real danger can begin.
If someone attempts trance mediumship without proper training and protection, they may unknowingly attract a wandering or negative spirit. And once that connection is made, it is not always easy to break.
Some spirits do not want to leave.
Over the years, I have spent a great deal of time helping people who made these mistakes. Many thought they were simply experimenting harmlessly with spirituality, only to later find themselves deeply affected by negative energies or attachments.
Common Sense and Spiritual Protection
The important thing to remember is this: trance mediumship itself is not evil.
Like many spiritual practices, it depends entirely on how it is approached.
If you use common sense, seek proper guidance, ask for protection, and work within a safe and experienced circle, there is usually nothing to fear.
But people should never assume they are somehow immune to spiritual problems or believe they possess special powers that automatically protect them.
Protection matters.
Training matters.
Respect matters.
Before doing any form of spiritual work — whether trance mediumship, sitting in circle, using a Ouija board, or even visiting haunted places — always ask for protection. Ask your loved ones and guides to draw close around you.
If approached properly, spiritual development can be a beautiful and uplifting experience.
But it should always be approached with care, wisdom, and respect.
