What Is a Ghost? A Simple Explanation

What Is a Ghost? A Simple Explanation

It’s a question I’m asked time and time again:

“What exactly is a ghost?”

People often expect a complicated or mysterious answer — something frightening, something unknown. But in truth, the answer is much simpler than most imagine.

Most Ghosts Are Just People

From my experience, around 90% of the ghosts I deal with are simply souls still in a house.

They are not strange creatures or unknown entities.
They are people — just like you and me.

Some have been there for years.
Sometimes 10, 20, even 100 years or more.

And the reason?

In most cases, they are simply confused.

What Happens After We Die?

When we pass, we leave the physical body — but we don’t lose awareness.

Most people will remain close to the earth for a short time, often two to three weeks, adjusting to what has happened. After that, they move on naturally to the next world.

But there is one very important factor:

Free will.

And this is where things can change.

Why Some Souls Stay Behind

Not everyone chooses to move on straight away.

Some people:

  • Don’t realise they have died
  • Feel attached to their home
  • Have spent their whole life in one place and don’t want to leave
  • Simply feel more comfortable staying where they are

So they remain.

Over time, they become used to being there — often without anyone sensing them at all.

Until something changes.

When a Ghost Makes Itself Known

Very often, activity begins when something disrupts their environment.

It could be:

  • Renovations
  • Walls being removed
  • Changes to the structure of the house

This can unsettle them.

And that’s usually when I get the call — often from people who never believed in any of this before.

They don’t understand what’s happening.
But they know something is there.

What I Do

When I arrive, I’m able to sense these souls.

Using my own free will, I communicate with them, reassure them, and help them move on to where they should be.

In the vast majority of cases, that’s all it takes.

Are There Darker Cases?

Yes — but they are far less common.

There are occasions where I have come across what I would describe as entities, something much darker and more difficult.

There are also troubled or negative spirits, which people sometimes confuse with “ghosts.”

But it’s important to understand:

Just as there are good and bad people in this world, the same applies beyond it.

The key point is this — they can all be dealt with. Every case I’ve encountered, I’ve been able to resolve.

When Spirits Attach to People

Sometimes, the situation isn’t about a house — it’s about a person.

I’ve worked with many individuals who have had a spirit attached to them, affecting:

  • Their emotions
  • Their thoughts
  • Their wellbeing

And almost every time, there is a common cause.

They have:

  • Sat in an unprotected circle
  • Used a Ouija board
  • Opened themselves up without understanding what they were doing

If you think about it logically — you wouldn’t walk into a room full of strangers and invite anyone to follow you home.

But that is essentially what happens in these situations.

There’s No Need to Be Afraid

Now, this is important.

This is not something you need to live in fear of.

Most spirits are not harmful.
Most are simply confused and need help.

And even in the more difficult cases, solutions are always possible.

Final Thoughts

There is far more around us than we fully understand.

Everything I share comes from real experiences — from people I’ve helped, homes I’ve visited, and situations I’ve resolved.

So when someone asks me, “What is a ghost?”
My answer is always the same:

In most cases, it’s simply someone who hasn’t yet realised they can move on.
