The Importance of Understanding Life After Death
As President of the Alton Christian Spiritualist Church, I am often called upon to officiate funeral services. What continually amazes me is how varied these services can be, depending on the beliefs and openness of those attending. In services where the congregation is spiritually aware, there is often an understanding that death is not the end but rather a transition. People in these congregations know that their loved ones draw close to them even after passing, and they are open to the possibility of continued connection and extraordinary experiences. Many who come to our church for the first time, over the course of a year or two, learn that their loved ones are at peace. They receive messages from mediums, see proof that resonates with them, and come to understand that life indeed continues after death.
Recently, I officiated a funeral service for a group of people who did not hold spiritual beliefs or awareness. The service was still meaningful and respectful, but it had a different atmosphere. The lady who had passed had been involved in spiritualist practices during her life, which brought a sense of continuity to the ceremony. However, for many attending, this was a traditional service marked by final goodbyes and profound grief. For those who believe that death is the end—an irreversible parting—there is often a sense of finality that can create emotional barriers, blocking the possibility of sensing their loved ones’ presence and understanding that life continues in another form.
In contrast, services for spiritually aware individuals are often completely different experiences. They become celebrations of life, filled with an uplifting acknowledgment that their loved ones have moved on to a place of peace and reunion. This perspective brings joy and comfort because attendees have already received proof or have an open mind that affirms the continuation of the soul. They understand that their loved one is surrounded by love, meeting others who have passed before them. This knowledge transforms the funeral into a much more positive occasion—a true celebration of life.
These experiences emphasize the importance of spreading awareness and planting seeds of understanding in as many minds as possible. The more people we can help open to the idea of life after death, the easier it becomes for their loved ones to draw near. As mediums, we can often provide proof through readings and other forms of communication, but beyond that, fostering openness in people’s minds is key.
It’s essential to remember that our loved ones on the other side are not gone; they are actively sending love, waiting for us, and hoping we can find comfort. From their perspective, if we maintain a degree of understanding and peace, it brings them great relief. They can see us moving forward, receive our prayers, and support us on our own life paths. Our happiness and openness make it easier for them to reach out and offer their love. Lowering our emotional and mental barriers and inviting them to draw close can make an incredible difference.
As a medium, I see firsthand how transformative this can be. The connection, love, and support from those who have passed are real, and acknowledging this can bring comfort and joy to both sides of the veil.
